Course objectives
Upon completion of the two hour training session, the advanced MRI student will able to create and maintain their own blogging website for their digital procedures manual.
1. Given a working knowledge of basic computer skills, a computer, and access to the Internet, the student will be able to create a new blog, choosing a title, web address, and template on the blogging web site.
2. Demonstrate how to create a new post by producing three posts on their blog
3. Demonstrate how to create a new page by producing two pages on their blog
4. Upload images on both a post and page by providing an image on at least one page and one post
Learning theory
The conceptual framework of this training is based on constructivism theories of learning. The training simplifies the complex implementation of digital procedures manual by introducing students to the resource they will be using to develop their manual. During the session, students build their knowledge base and are taught those basic features of the blogging website necessary to create their online procedures book. The students actively participate during the training by having their own computers to practice the information provided by the instructor.
Lesson Structure
Implementation: 2 hours
The purpose of this training course is to provide the students with the fundamental skills necessary to create a digital MRI procedure manual. The use of a digital resource is a unique approach replacing the three-inch binder of copied material previously required. The students will be taught how to create their own digital blogging web site, build pages, make posts and upload images needed to complete the procedures manual assignment. This course is designed for those advanced students who have already successfully passed MRI 401 Principles of Physics and MRI 405 Safety and have basic computer and literacy skills necessary to access the Internet, read and comprehend instructions. The training session is taught by one of the instructors from the MRI department who is familiar with the procedures manual and has experience in using digital resources including blogger.com.
Materials:
The instructor has available a three-ringed binder of the procedure manual, a digital example using a blogging website of the procedures manual and a folder of MRI images.
Room Arrangement and Equipment:
The required session will take place during one of the lab periods held on Fridays between 4pm-8pm, in an internet ready computer classroom on campus.
24-Hour Checklist
· Day before: Gather materials, confirm room assignment with Registrar’s office, contact IT to make sure all computers are working and access to the internet is available. Confirm the computer projector is functioning properly. Confirm with IT that someone is available to resolve any technical issues day of training. Email all students the folder of MRI images to be used during the training session.
· One hour before the training starts: Check equipment and computers to make sure all are working properly. Turn on the computer projector. Open websites needed during the presentation onto the desktop for easy access. Bring all materials to the training room.
· Just before the course starts: Make sure all hardware is turned on and the computer projector is operating.
· Start the course:
Gaining Attention – 5 minutes
|
Prestart: Invite the students to sit at a computer station and start the training session.
In your own words…
The content of instruction for this training session is sequenced such that the students gain the knowledge necessary to deepen their learning of MRI procedures through the creation of a blog website. Building upon classroom coursework about MRI imaging procedures, discuss the contents of the procedures manual and how students will utilize this information in their education.
Recall – 10 minutes
|
In your own words…
Explain the objective of the training session to educate the group on how to create and use a blogger account for the purpose of producing the procedures manual. Students are shown in detail a sample of a three-ringed binder procedure manual.
Direction – 5 minutes
|
Turn computer projector on, have digital procedures manual blog on screen.
In your own words…
Students are shown a digital representation of the same material created with a blog. These visual aids support the content being discussed. They also support those students who are visual learners and rely on the visuals to better their understanding of the spoken word (Blagojevic et al, 2011). The instructor points out the inclusion of images in the new format and discusses benefits of having this information as a digital resource rather than copied material.
Content – 10 minutes
|
Show video demonstrating how to create a blog, make posts, and upload images.
In your own words…
A brief video is show demonstrating how to log into blogger.com, create a blog, make posts, and upload images on the post. Using motion media is a powerful learning tool that provides an engaging and memorable learning experience to explore subject matter (Schulz, 2006). It will also allow the students to access this information at a later time for review because this video is available to them via the internet.
Direction – 20 minutes
|
Ask students to log in to the school computers using their college user name, find the email sent with the folder of MRI images and save that folder to the desktop of their computer. Look up when ready to begin.
In your own words…
Ask students to log into the computers, download and save the folder they received in the email with MRI images to the desktop. Explain that they will create a practice blog and will mimic the process demonstrated by the video. Explain that a hands-on approach can enhance learning especially weeks after training. The added tactile and proprioceptive input and the personal sense of success experienced can enhance memory and retention of the training session (Hearn, Miller, & Nelson, 2010). Also explain that you, the trainer, will demonstrate the process on the computer projector throughout the session and will provide feedback and answer questions.
Ask student to type in the URL www.blogger.com
In your own words with a demonstration…
Ask students to create a user account in Google to access blogger.com. Once everyone is logged into blogger.com, have students create a user name with password and select a template for their blog. Have students create a post with images. Demonstrate process on computer projector.
Application feedback – level 1 – 10 minutes
|
In your own words…
Now that you have learned how to create a post with images make three posts with images on your blog on your own. Walk around room to observe and answer questions.
Content- 20 minutes
|
Show students the digital protocol book again only this time in more detail.
In your own words…
The students are shown the digital protocol book again, only this time more emphasis is placed on the contents. Students are informed that this is the expectation for their procedures manual.
Direction – 10 minutes
|
In your own words with a demonstration…
Students observe the trainer demonstrate on the computer projector how to create pages with images. Have student create a page and upload an image onto the page. Demonstrate process on computer projector.
Application feedback – level 2 – 10 minutes
|
In your own words…
Now that you have learned how to create a pages with images make two pages with images on your blog on your own. Walk around room to observe and answer questions.
Application feedback – level 3 – 10 minutes
|
In your own words…
Invite students to work together and help each other if needed.
Evaluation – 10 minutes
|
In your own words…
Walk around the room and have each student describe and demonstrate how to create either a post or page with an image.
Closure – 5 minutes

The course taught you how to use blogger.com to create posts and pages with images. This semester we will be developing our procedures manual and you will be expected to use the information learned in this program to make your digital procedures manual a viable learning and study guide. It is much different than the hardcover binder once used. This digital resource will have images associated with each sequence in the study along with the parameters and prescriptions.
If you feel you need more time learning blogger.com, I am always available during my office hours for assistance. I would also suggest you find videos on line at youtube.com or consult your classmates for help. Don’t wait until the end of the semester to ask for help. To develop confidence using blogger.com practice creating and editing posts and pages. You are also welcome to explore other features available.
If there are no questions, that is the end of the lesson. See you all next week.
